JVM to hold a Seminar on `Internet, Social Media & Mobile Technology: Challenges & Opportunities in Odisha’ on May 1, 2015 (Friday) at BBSR

Greetings.

The Janata Vikas Manch (JVM) has organised three workshops and one seminar on the Web, Social Media & Mobile Technology in the last one year in Odisha. In this process, we have found that there are several major Challenges  as well as Opportunities in making the state Digital. We need to tap the opportunities and overcome the challenges as well.

Challenges

There are several major Challenges:

1. Freedom of expression on Internet & Social Media: The freedom of expression on internet and social media should be upheld. We need to evolve a self-code of conduct instead of allowing some external agencies to do the same.
2. Digital divide is a major problem. The individuals, organisations and areas equipped with the digital power are going up fast in the ladder. And, those who do not have are lagging behind. 
3. A large portion of the state do not have electricity or no regular power supply.
4. Bad internet and mobile connectivity is another major problem.
5. Low penetration of Computer.
6. People are yet to be techno-savvy and understand the power of modern communication technology in the development process.
7. There are several other challenges for making the state digital.
 
Opportunities
There are Opportunities in this sector:

1.   A large percentage of the population is educated Youth who want to connect with the global world.

2.   Lot of scope to expand the digital network which can provide employment to the youth of the state. The Web and Blog designing, Digital Media Campaigning and other Internet related work can generate a large scale employment and entreprenural opportunities in Odisha.

3.   Digital Media should be linked with the Industry and Agriculture. The above are few points under Challenges and Opportunities head. We need to identify similar other issues in both the heads. And, work to resolve both aspects of the subject.

4.   Digital Marketing & Online Ads in Odisha
Online Ads is growing fast. It is expected that the Online Ads will be equal to TV Ads by 2018. 

We see firms like listed private controversial companies like Tata Steel, Sesa Sterlite (Vedanta) and PSUs Nalco, & Paradip Port Trust give Online Ads to the news portals.

Currently, these firms are not checking  the Web traffic and other indicators of the health of the website before giving Ad to the news portal due to lack of acknowledge on the Web Analytics.  If the portal does not have adequate numbers to justify for getting Ads, then any one can complain to the Govt if they are PSU Ads and the shareholders can raise the issue in the Annual Generalbody Meeting (AGM) if it a listed firm.  Hence,  Alexa Ranking (www.alexa.com) and other indicators of Web Analytics should be checked before giving Ads to the news websites in Odisha.

We need to scrutinize the role / contribution of Odisha’s IT ministry along with Odisha's Computer Application Centre (OCAC) in the development of Digital Media in Odisha. Please visit following website: http://www.ocac.in/

There will be four sessions in the one day Seminar which will be held
on May 1, 2015 (Friday) between 10 AM to 6 PM – Inaugural,
Two Technical Sessions and Valedictory Session.

With an aim to discuss and debate, Janata Vikas Manch (JVM) in
association with Samagra Mass Media (SMM) and others will organise a One Day Seminar / Conference on the `Internet, Social Media & Mobile Technology: Challenges & Opportunities in Odisha’.

It will be held on May1, 2015 (Friday) at Red Cross Bhawan / Or CYSD, Bhubaneswar. between 10 AM to 6 PM. (The place of the meeting will be decided by April 20, 2015 and all the confirmed Participants will be informed about the same through mail.

Participant Fee:
